for the Arts!
For
71 years Brevard has been home to the world-renowned Brevard Music
Center. Brevard is also home to the Porter Center of Performing Arts
(Brevard College), and the Transylvania Community Arts Council which
brings diverse programs, concerts, and exhibits to our mountain community.

Transylvania
County is rich in both cultural and recreational opportunities, from
the summer music at the Brevard Music Center, to hiking, hunting,
fishing, horseback riding, canoeing, camping and biking in the Pisgah
National Forest. There are downtown events such as the Festival of
Arts, and the Brevard Philharmonic Orchestra, plus countywide music
festivals.

Transylvania County also offers more than 15 summer and year round
camps for both boys and girls.
A
Brief History of BMC:
In
1936 James Christian Pfohl opened a summer band camp for boys on the
campus of Davidson College in North Carolina. Fifty young instrumentalists
appeared for that first session. In 1945 Pfohl moved his camp to a beautiful
site just outside the town of Brevard in Western North Carolina, and
the now coeducational Transylvania Music Camp was born.

A few years later, Pfohl established a festival at the camp, and this
soon became an integral part of the summer activities. The name was
changed to "Brevard Music Center" in 1955.

In 1965, Henry Janiec succeeded James Christian Pfohl as Artistic Director.
Mr. Janiec led the Center for more than thirty years, through the 1996
season. David Effron became Artistic Director in 1997. He will retire
after the 2007 season. In 2008 Keith Lockhart becomes Artistic Advisor
of the Brevard Music Center.
Brevard's
White Squirrels:
In
1986, the Brevard City Council voted unanimously to approve an ordinance
declaring and establishing a sanctuary for squirrels, especially the
white squirrel. Today, Brevard residents celebrate the white squirrel
at the Annual White Squirrel Festival, held each Memorial Day Weekend.

In addition to Brevard, white squirrels have been spotted in other parts
of Transylvania County. They are also found in Olney, Ill; Kenton TN;
Versailles, Ill; Marionville, MO; Trenton, NJ; Bloomfield, NY; Greenwood
SC; and Hodgenville, KY.
Brevard's
New Library:
The
new library has 35,000 square feet of space for a variety of features
including a community room, a local history room that contains the county
archives, a reference area with 24 public computers, a young adult area,
popular browsing area, and children's area.
