Fall Changing of the COLOR in Brevard NC!

Fall is beautiful for many reasons in Western North Carolina – the air is crisp – the sky is deep blue – the days are warm and the nights are cool – gentle breezes blow.  All factors in our many hardwood trees to put on their best show – the changing of the COLOR of their leaves.

According to the US Forest Service tree and plant leaves get their color from pigments.  There are 3 pigments involved in fall color:

  1. Chlorophyll – gives leaves their GREEN color
  2. Carotenoids – provide the YELLOW, ORANGE, and BROWN colors
  3. Anthocyanins – give the RED and PURPLE colors

Anthocyanins are produced in the fall responding to bright light and excell plant sugars in the leaf cells.
