Happy St. Patrick’s Day – Wearing Your Green?
Today Irish and non-Irish alike celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by wearing green or those who are caught not wearing green are pinched affectionately. Seattle and other cities paint the traffic stripe of their parade routes green. Chicago dyes its river green and has done so since 1962, Savannah dyes its downtown city fountains green. Missouri University of Science and Technology – St Pat’s Board Alumni paint 12 city blocks kelly green with mops before the annual parade, Jamestown, New York’s, the Chadakoin River is dyed green each year
Originally the color associated with Saint Patrick was blue, not,in fact, green. However over the years the color green and its association with Saint Patrick’s day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick’s Day as early as the 17th century. He is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinty to the pre-Christian Irish, and the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the day.
